Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a flagship safe motherhood intervention under the National Health Mission (NHM), launched by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, in 2005. It aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional deliveries among economically disadvantaged pregnant women.This scheme especially focuses on rural, SC/ST, and BPL women, providing cash incentives to encourage safe childbirth in health facilities.
Objective of the scheme
Promote institutional deliveries to ensure safe childbirth. Reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). Encourage antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) check-ups. Strengthen the role of ASHA workers in guiding pregnant women to health facilities.

Eligibility Criteria of the scheme
For Rural Areas:Must be from Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.Must be aged 19 years or above.First or second live birth.Belong to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) category (priority).✅ For Urban Areas:BPL women, preferably SC/ST, aged 19 or above.Institutional delivery at government or accredited private hospital.🔁 Exclusions:Deliveries at home without assistance of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) may not be eligible for full benefits.
Benefits Offered in the scheme
Rural areas: ₹1,400 per institutional delivery.Urban areas: ₹1,000 per institutional delivery.ASHA workers also receive incentives for facilitating the delivery:₹600 in rural areas₹200 in urban areas💰 Total financial benefit can go up to ₹2,000 per case (beneficiary + ASHA).💳 Mode of Payment: Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the bank or post office account of the beneficiary.
