The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a transformative initiative launched by the Government of India under the Ministry of Jal Shakti on 15th August 2019. It aims to ensure “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal” – providing functional household tap connections (FHTC) to every rural household by 2024, ensuring adequate and safe drinking water on a regular and long-term basis.This mission focuses on building a community-led, decentralized water management system by empowering Gram Panchayats and local communities.
Objective of the scheme
To provide safe, adequate, and regular drinking water through household tap connections to all rural households.To promote sustainable water sources, water conservation, and water resource management.To implement community participation in water infrastructure planning, execution, and management.To encourage gender empowerment, as it drastically reduces the burden on women and girls who travel long distances to fetch water.

Eligibility Criteria of the scheme
The mission covers all rural households across India, including:Below Poverty Line (BPL) familiesAbove Poverty Line (APL) familiesHouseholds in Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and minority communitiesHouseholds in water-stressed and remote tribal areasNote: Households in rural areas not already connected to a piped water supply are automatically considered eligible.
